lovely as loyalty

There’s nothing ever as lovely as loyalty.

I don’t want to be afraid.
She didn’t want her heart broken.
He couldn’t remember who he was.
They were lost in a big new world.
A father letting his daughters go,
A mother who worried too much, as mothers do.

The black dog stayed close by them all.

The black dog  took away the night terrors from me.
The black dog let her cry, just watched comedies with her on the floor.
The black dog patiently waited for him to come around again.
The black dog asked for belly rubs to let them know they weren’t alone.
The black dog promised a father he would take care of daddy’s girls,
The black dog reassured the mother’s worries, a solid presence, guarding.

There’s nothing ever as lovely as loyalty.

He counts the hours until the front door closes again.
He watches out the window as the car pulls away.
He becomes a shadow when the suitcases come out, not wanting to be left.
He sends turf flying as the whistle pierces, running back.
He warns away strangers, they don’t belong here.
He tries so very hard to be a good, good dog.

The black dog stayed close by them all.

I’m not afraid.
Her heart is healing.
He moved on to the future he was made for.
They found a path to tread upon..
A father trusts his girls are safe,
A mother sleeps a little easier at night.

The black dog stays close, lovely loyalty.

  1. Loyalty can be a hard thing to come by these days, and you really cannot replace that of a loved dog. This post was great! and makes me want to get one of my own very soon.
